Canoeing through the Everglades

This part of my trip was one of those sneaky things that the travel agent put in without me realising it. I must remember to thank him, it was such a brilliant day.

There are only two Everglades in the world, one in Florida, USA and one in Noosa, Australia. The Noosa river and Everglades show a part of nature that you wouldn't usually see when travelling down the east coast which in my opinion is pretty awesome! The best way to properly explore them is by canoe or kayak so in I jumped and using the concentration of an eagle about to catch dinner, I remained upright the entire time!

I went with part of a tour company as you need to navigate the first half of the river by boat, only switching to our canoes when we got closer to to the narrow mouth which lead to the Everglades. The reflection was as clear as glass, the water looked almost black due to the colour of the sand and canoeing down it was more enjoyable than physically tiring. Which knowing me was a definite bonus, as otherwise I may have ended up in the water!

After we had had our morning cup of tea and a leamington (Aussie favourite - basically sponge cake smothered in chocolate with coconut shavings - I know dream!!) we partnered up and were off. The canoe ride itself took roughly one and a half hours and there was no stopping, but to be honest you didn't really need to stop. There was no currant so one big push and you found yourself gliding for quite a while.

When we finally made it to our spot we were greeted with the welcoming smell of steak on the barbie! Joy!

On the way back we were given a brief history of Noosa by our ever chatty tour guide! Apparently there are more women than men in the city, and the average age is 53. As we came back into the main river we passed an island owned by Richard Branson (anyone fancy giving me $24,000 so I can afford one night there??)!and a fleet of boats sailed by wags (Wednesday Afternoon Gentlemen). The whole day was a great success and was a bit of a welcome break from the endless beaches (not that I'm not loving those though - I definitely am!)
