The Slutty Pumpkin

Ok I have to admit that this year I gave Halloween a miss, instead of seeing if I could make something remotely scary out of what was lying around in the house I decided a night in was slightly more preferable (does that mean I am old?).

As much as I would like to say that I had a glass of wine, watched a film and had a chilled evening that was not the case. Instead I was allocated designated driver for the night as we had to drop my brother off at his party and then go for a few evening drinks. Just before I left a friend of mine sent me a video showing some young girls and their take on today’s women’s Halloween costumes.
It's not really something that I have ever thought about in great detail, if anything I just sort of accepted that when it came to Halloween girls just wore something slutty – wait - what?! When I started to think about it properly I realised just how acceptable it was to our society. Typical sex sells type of stuff. That evening I received numerous snapchats from my friends in their costumes and to be fair to them in past I have definitely been guilty of finding my Halloween costume in Ann Summers or somewhere similar – but the question is why? Why do we feel that it’s acceptable to go out in next to nothing just because its Halloween? Is it for boys or is it something that has just been so embedded in society that we just go with it?

These Questions got me to thinking about an episode of How I Met Your Mother called the Slutty Pumpkin  - Now correct me if I am wrong but surely dressing up as an orange vegetable cannot be slutty? Why bother – if you are after male attention you might as well turn up in a corset and fishnets and be done with it. It seems to me that everything is acceptable on Halloween – though I have to admit although we girls go out and find something more revealing that we would wear on a normal night I have yet to see any guys hurriedly dressing up as Magic Mike.

The next morning I was bombarded by messages from some of my friends complaining that although the night had been great they had received a lot of unwanted male attention. My general response was don’t wear something like that then. Girls if you don’t want the attention go as a werewolf – word on the street is that boys don’t like hairy girls so I reckon you will be safe!

Now when next Halloween comes around and I find myself being forced to find a costume I implore my friends to remind me of this blog before I end up back in Ann Summers trying in vain to find something which won’t make me look like I belong in the red light district.

  1. Haha, this made me giggle! I absolutely dare you dress as a werewolf the next time you decide to do Halloween! But it's insanely true, and I will in fact be reminding you of this next year ;) xx
