I have a lot of catching up and writing to do about my time around New Zealand but before I get into the nitty gritty of things I thought I would start with something a bit lighthearted. I met loads of people travelling, some I liked and some I didn't but here are 10 examples of people you will definitely meet in any hostel anywhere in the world.
1) The 18year old puppy. Probably the most common form of hostel dwelling creature. Usually first time out of native country (without parents), occupies time by drinking copious amounts of cheap alcohol and attempting to impress the opposite sex.
3) The local traveller. This traveller tends to be older than the average backpacker, using the cheap hostel rooms as their base while seeing the area. Warning: they will always claim to know more than you.
4) The social media traveller. I know I'm slightly guilty of this, but only because I have an Instagram account, I'm not as bad as some of the people I have met I promise: these people tend to live their trip through a lense, they are the first off the bus to find wifi and take about 3 million photos. If lost they can usually be found in the nearest cafe editing photos and posting them to their doting Twitter and Instagram followers.
6) The sexual fiend. Obnoxious, loud and arrogant these travellers are usually drunk of high, will attempt to grab the attention of their sexual conquests by any means necessary. They tend to have little consideration for those around. If seen to be sharing a room with you I advise good ear plugs and deep sarcasm aimed in their general direction.
7) The solo traveller. Usually chilled, over friendly and up for just about anything. These travellers divide into two types: the type who have worked to allow themselves to travel and the type who are using daddy's money to get from a to b. The latter tends to be a tad more carefree than the former.
9) The travelling couples. Aside from the ongoing selfies, knowing looks and sentence finishing these travellers and the most chilled of the bunch. They know what they hope to gain out of travelling and nothing will stand in their way. If they break up though then it's an entirely different story and everyone gets involved.
10) The fellow native. This traveller will be drawn to you as soon as you hear where they are from. A bond will slowly be made as you discover their similar love of Jaffa cakes and constant need for a cup of tea. You will part ways after discussing the latest episode of Downton Abbey but you leave knowing you will find another just around the corner.
